ATLANT® Strong Composite Columns receive aBG/abZ approval

Peikko has received general construction type approval and general construction supervision approval (Z-26.3-67) for the ATLANT® Strong Composite Column from the German Institute for Structural Engineering (DIBt). This not only opens up individual and creative design solutions but also new structural possibilities for maximizing floor space utilization in buildings.

ATLANT® and ATLANT® Strong are highly load-bearing composite columns with integrated fire protection. The columns feature particularly slender cross-sections, available in circular, rectangular, or square shapes. Especially in the case of fire, ATLANT® Strong stands out with up to 40% higher load-bearing capacities compared to comparable cross-sections of other steel core columns.

These composite columns consist of hollow steel profiles with internal reinforcement (ATLANT® type) or an internal solid steel core (ATLANT® Strong type). Depending on the configuration, columns are either delivered factory-filled with concrete or filled on-site. Both types can be implemented as single-story or multi-story solutions and can also be combined, with cross-sectional dimensions maintained unchanged across floors. Column lengths are always project-specific.

Design principles

ATLANT® composite columns are designed according to Eurocode 4. For ATLANT® Strong, the aBG/abZ serves as the basis for design, ensuring an efficient approval and construction process. Designers and builders benefit from clear regulations covering both cold and fire scenarios. A type test will also become available in the future and is currently being processed by the DIBt.
