EPDs: Data drives better decisions
An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) presents standardized, third-party-verified information about a construction product’s environmental impacts throughout its life cycle. Based on Life Cycle Assessment, Peikko’s EPDs follow EN 15804 and ISO 14025.
Why does it matter in construction? EPDs provide consistent data for building life cycle assessments, sustainability certifications, tenders, and product comparisons. They help project teams identify where impacts occur and evaluate materials, transport options and design solutions on a comparable basis.
How is EPD data used in practice? Beyond project assessments, EPD data can inform product development, procurement and sales, and help identify ways to reduce embodied carbon in manufacturing.

From data to decisions: Insights from the Carbon Experts Summit
The construction industry now has more EPDs, LCAs, and carbon data than ever before. At the Carbon Experts Summit Nordics 2026 in Stockholm, one key topic was that the challenge is no longer collecting data but helping people understand and use it.
Peikko's Enni Karikoski shared how EPDs have evolved from a reporting exercise into a practical tool for design, procurement, sales, compliance, and customer decision-making.
Three key takeaways from the summit
- EPD data must be understandable
Companies are training teams and simplifying EPD information so that complex sustainability data becomes practical insight. Data creates value only when it influences decisions. - EPDs can support circular choices
Circularity is moving beyond recycling toward reuse, design for disassembly, adaptability, and longer service life. EPDs help quantify impacts, while circular design helps preserve the value embedded in products and components. - Growing sectors need comparable product data
In rapidly growing sectors such as data centers, comparable product data helps project teams assess embodied carbon and make smarter choices about structures, materials, and circular solutions.
Ultimately, the value of carbon data lies not in how much we collect, but in how effectively we use it.
Happy World Sustainability Day!
World Sustainability Day, celebrated every last Wednesday of October, reminds us to take a look at how we live, how we build, and how today’s decisions shape tomorrow’s opportunities. For Peikko, this means helping the construction industry turn sustainability targets into practical, buildable choices through transparent EPD data, efficient structural solutions, and circular design.

This month's key insight
An EPD does not tell us whether a product is good or bad. It provides verified, comparable information that helps designers, customers, and project teams make better-informed choices.
What's coming up next?
Hybrid connections: building for lifelong sustainability
A building’s sustainability starts with design choices that matter long after construction. In the next issue, we explore how hybrid connections bring timber, steel, and concrete together to support material-efficient construction and flexible spaces that can meet changing needs throughout a building’s life.
Building with Less is Peikko's monthly look at smarter structural solutions for a sustainable built environment.
