The SHED Berlin: How prestressed concrete slabs and DELTABEAM® delivered a massive project on time

The SHED is a modern office and commercial ensemble that pioneers new architectural and construction approaches. The project is part of a larger development area, creating an urban cluster dedicated to offices, research, creative production, and services alongside several other new buildings. THE SHED represents a flagship project showcasing how innovative structural solutions can meet demanding architectural and commercial requirements in today’s construction market.

The construction challenge

THE SHED needed to deliver large open spaces without columns, a slim profile to maximize usable height, visible ceilings with no suspended systems, 90-minute fire protection (REI90), and fast construction in Berlin’s constrained urban environment. Traditional cast-in-situ concrete couldn’t meet these demands efficiently. This is where the combination of prestressed concrete + DELTABEAM® came into play and soon turned out to be the winning solution.

Key performance benefits and why they matter

Prestressed concrete slabs are reinforced with steel tendons that are tensioned to place the concrete under compression. This technique increases strength, reduces cracking, and allows for longer spans with thinner sections.

In SHED, the combination of prestressed concrete with DELTABEAM® delivers structural spans of up to 11 meters with a total floor depth of only 30 centimeters, creating slim, beam-free ceilings that maximize design flexibility. Just-in-time delivery of factory-made slabs allows immediate installation on pre-mounted beams without scaffolding or formwork, ensuring a fast and predictable construction process. Factory-controlled production secures consistent quality, with integrated fire protection up to REI90 (or REI120 with complementary systems) and full European Technical Assessment approval. The result is superior acoustics, reliable fire safety, and architectural freedom with exposed concrete finishes, while reducing site disruption and accelerating project delivery.

Key takeaway

The combination of prestressed slabs and DELTABEAM® enabled rapid construction in a dense urban environment, flexible spaces for diverse commercial tenants, and cost-effective achievement of complex architectural goals, as well as established a new benchmark for German commercial construction.

The SHED demonstrates that modern prefabrication doesn’t compromise on aesthetics or functionality—it enhances both while delivering faster, more predictable construction outcomes.
