Project of the Month: Mondi SCP ECO Plus, Ružomberok, Slovakia

Mondi SCP a. s. recently installed a new paper machine at their ECO Plus mill in Ružomberok, Slovakia. The buildings for the new machine used several unique technical solutions for the frames and the supporting structures, and the design office recommended Peikko bolted solutions to make them possible.

Building pulp and paper success

Mondi SCP’s plant in Ružomberok is the biggest integrated pulp and paper mill in the Slovakia, and their new PM19 paper machine is part of their ECO Plus investment project, worth € 340 million. The buildings that housed the new paper machine were designed by BHM INGENIEURE with a prefabricated reinforced concrete frame combined with a cast in situ foundations for the paper machine.

One of the unique aspects of the structure is that columns in the frames are connected to the foundation, which also consisted of groups of piles. This ensured structural stability and rigidity, combined with good mechanical resistance. Because BHM INGENIEURE had already had many good experiences with Peikko’s bolted column connections, they decided to use them again for this project.

Ensuring structural stiffness

First, the prefabricated columns were securely connected to the foundations using PEC® Column Shoes and & PPM® High-Strength Anchor Bolts. And then, to ensure the rigidity of the building frames, the columns were braced with ceiling constructions at the levels of +7,000 m and +14,000 m. Bracing beams were also added in the other direction at the level of +18,000 m. These beams were mounted on corbels on the columns and connected using Peikko’s BECO® Beam Shoes and COPRA® Anchoring Couplers.

The resulting buildings had a 23.85 m high two-storey prefabricated frame with continuous columns. The BECO® Beam Shoes and COPRA® Anchoring Couplers provided bolted connections that helped ensure that the frame joints were moment-rigid. This gave the whole frame the stability and rigidity it needed to absorb horizontal forces in the longitudinal direction of the production halls.

With the help of the construction company and the precaster, Peikko was able to deliver everything in the required quantity with the required quality according to the strict project schedule.
